What the spiritual path can look like
The spiritual path looks different for everyone but contains some of the same base elements, one of which includes doing inner work to change your outer reality. The process of finding the spiritual path has been described as finding a sense of hope, peace, and meaning.
Brief introduction to Sufism
Here is a very brief introduction to Sufism, which is a very practical and personal way of thinking about the spiritual path.
“The spiritual path cannot be found by seeking, but only seekers find it.”
That is my version of Sufi teacher Bayazid Bastami’s famous quote:
“God can never be found by seeking, yet only seekers find him.”
By saying this, Bastami demonstrates the basis of the Sufi teaching, which is that the spiritual path is a journey from the inner to the outer. It describes how through the realization of the self, the seeker may find spiritual realizations, and through finding spiritual realizations, the seeker becomes selfless, or without ego.
I included Bastami’s quote here because it has shaped how I view the world in many ways and has helped me on my path greatly, so it might help you too!
My interpretation of the spiritual path
First of all, thank you for caring about what I have to say.
Anyway, let’s get into it!
As I’ve said before and will keep saying, the spiritual path looks different for every single person, which speaks to how beautifully unique every person is. We all have our varying qualities, and somewhat paradoxically, in that variety, we can find our primary commonality, which is that we are all human.
In my experience and from what I see in others on the path, a huge part of the path is the deep and seemingly endless feeling of loneliness, a very human experience.
Luckily, us humans are blessed with the ability to seek outside of ourselves in an attempt to cure our loneliness. In the current timeline, reaching out instead of reaching into ourselves is highly encouraged. However, as you may have anticipated, there is duality to this “blessing” … it can also be considered a “curse”, especially if one gets trapped in it, and especially in the context of Sufism.
An example of how reaching out instead of reaching in is encouraged by society is the phenomenon of consumerism, which is the societal encouragement of endless consumption of goods and services. What if we wore our overconsumption? I know if I did, my winter-time outfit would look something like two beanies, three winter jackets, and four pairs of boots (please don’t judge… I’m working on it! 😊). Note – consumerism can only thrive in a capitalistic economy, where money is valued above all else.
Thus, without much external support from general society, the seeker on the spiritual path must, instead of seeking outside of themselves to try to cure their loneliness, become a seeker of their “true self”. And let me tell you, that can be very difficult! But, it definitely can be done, because it has been done!
I put “true self” in quotations because there are many terms for it these days, which include but are not limited to
- higher self.
- inner child.
- best self.
- ego-less self.
Through many trials and tribulations, the seeker will eventually find their way back to their true self.
In more personal terms, only through digging deep into ourselves, understanding and processing our “shadow self” and accepting ourselves without shame, we become Sufi seekers who eventually find the spiritual path.
Again, I put “shadow self” in quotations because there are many terms for it, which include but are not limited to
- dark side.
- alter ego.
- lower self.
- dark twin.
- disowned part of yourself.
- black wolf within.
- devil that made you do it.
- idealized self.
The path takes a lifetime to find and walk upon. Not by seeking will you find it, but by becoming a seeker you will. Try to wrap your head around that!
Final thoughts and spirit message
I don’t know what the journey on my path will bring, but all I know so far is that as I learn more, I realize how little I know. Also, right now, following my heart feels right.
As I handwrote this post, I got this spirit message that I sense will help one of you:
“You don’t have to do anything that you don’t want to do, whether it’s deep down in your heart or just sitting on the surface. As you start to value yourself more and to set limits on how other people can access your time and attention, you become limitless.”
Thank you for reading!
Lots of love,
